One of the big changes with the upcoming California Health Reform are there will be defined enrollment dates and cutoffs. You will no longer be able to change plans or purchase new coverage whenever you want. Starting October 1, 2013, there will be an initial enrollment window that lasts until March 31, 2014. If you miss the window you need to wait until the following year to make changes or purchase coverage. Here are the big dates for the first year:
- Oct. 1, 2013 – Enrollment begins for Healthcare Exchange plans starting Jan. 1, 2014
- Jan. 1, 2014 – Health Exchange plans go live
- Mar. 31, 2014 – Enrollment period ends
The future enrollment period, starting in Fall 2014 will be October 15 – Dec. 7. This is extremely important to understand because it’s the only window in the entire year that you will have to make changes to your insurance, whether you have private insurance, an Exchange policy, or insurance through work (that means every insurance policy other than Medicare and Medi-Cal).
